John Foster may have finished as the runner-up on Season 23 ofย American Idol, but heโs stepping off that stage with a full head of steam and no intention of slowing down. Just hours after the Sunday, May 18 finale, the Louisiana teenager is already charting the road ahead โ and itโs paved with music, memories, and maybe even a little dancing.
Foster is kicking things off with the release of his debut single,ย โTell That Angel I Love Herโย โ a deeply personal track he wrote in honor of his late friend, Maggie Dunn, who tragically passed away in a car accident. โIโm going to push that out as much as possible,โ he says. โI wrote that song by myself, and I think it gives people a real look at who I am as a writer and as an artist.โ Itโs just the beginning, though โ heโs already itching to get back in the studio. โI love being in the studio,โ he admits. โI canโt wait to record a full album.โ
Back home in Louisiana, excitement is building for a hometown celebration complete with a concert and parade โ a fitting welcome for the young star who captured Americaโs hearts. And though Foster isnโt ruling out a spin onย Dancing With the Starsย โ โItโs certainly not a no,โ he teases โ for now, his immediate plan is a little more grounded. โIโve been missing my dog,โ he says with a smile. โIโm just super excited to get back home.โ
Foster took the finale results with grace, smiling even as host Ryan Seacrest announced Jamal Roberts as the winner. โIโm extremely happy to be here,โ he reflected. โThis season has been unbelievable. The talent โ wow. To be second out of 120,000 people? To even be in the Top 24, which was the most talented group Iโve ever seen? Iโm proud.โ
Meanwhile, third-place finalist Breanna Nix had her moment of reflection too. Unlike Foster, who found out his fate in the showโs final minutes, Nix was eliminated earlier in the evening. But she was at peace with the outcome. โI feel like God ordered every step I took on this show,โ she said. โIt was meant to be. I even had a feeling in my stomach that Iโd be the first one out [in the finale], and I had peace about it.โ
Nix, a stay-at-home mom with a powerhouse voice, says she knew who was going to win the second she heard Jamal Roberts sing during Hollywood Week. โIโll never forget the feeling,โ she said. โI thought, โHeโs going to win. Heโs the one.โโ She didnโt even know him yet, but she walked over, introduced herself, made her prediction โ and asked if she could get it on video. โI said, โYouโre going to winย American Idol, dude. And I want to be the one who called it.โโ After Roberts was crowned, she reminded him of that video. โHeโs like, โI remember, Breanna,โโ she laughed.
Both Foster and Nix understand that winning isnโt everything. Manyย Idolย legends โ from Jennifer Hudson to Clay Aiken โ didnโt take the top spot. But they still soared. โI already feel like Iโve won,โ said Nix. โIโve grown so much. My first song,ย โHigher,โย just came out. That moment was surreal. So many doors have opened, and Iโm really excited to walk through them.โ
And ifย Idolย comes calling again? Sheโs all in. โIโd love to come back โ as a judge, a mentor, anything.ย American Idolย will always have a huge place in my heart.โ
For both finalists, this isnโt the end โ itโs the spark that lights a brand-new beginning. โPlease be confident in who you are as an artist,โ Foster advises future contestants. โNever accept failure as a final defeat. This is only the beginning. Donโt be discouraged. Keep going.โ
